Voltage Inc — After School Affairs — Shinichi Review

The second of the bachelors in After School Affairs is up~

Hmm, he didn’t grab me on the prologue or extended prologue much, but I do admit the idea of him is intriguing. I do like the assertive type, and the fact that he seems to have split personalities based on public and private sounds fun. KareKano was one of my favorite animated shows growing up (let’s not talk about where the manga ended up…) and ever since then that trope has a soft spot in my heart.

While Rikiya was a retelling of the failure to success story, with Shinichi you’re in charge of the accelerated class and your goal is to get all of them to score 90% on their next test. So he comes up with the idea of a study camp and basically you’re going to work those poor kids to the bone day and night all week (including weekends) studying to get a high score.

He warns her not to fall in love with him, because those feelings can’t be reciprocated, of course.

Yeeaaaapppp he’s a pretty cocky guy. haaaaa

You also learn about the number one student in the male side has been seen doing compensated dating, which is basically when high school students go out with older men or women and are compensated for their time with money, fashionable goods, or whatever the student wants.  Sometimes this involves a form of prostitution, sometimes it doesn’t, from what I’ve read about it.

The boys are more clever than MC gives credit, because they don’t agree with the study camp at all (who would, tbh) So Shinichi’s solution is that MC has to take the test too. haaaaaReason being, he needs someone as horrible as the students at math to prove it can be done. haaaaa OMG he thinks absolutely nothing of her LOL

She’s an amateur teacher (whatever that means) but he takes on a really… positive feel? He’s snarky and he’s tough love personified, but I feel like he’s that coach that’s really hard on you but inspiring at the same time. The kind you want to work hard for so they’ll congratulate you when you realize your potential, sort of thing.

The only downside of that is that I feel like he’s more of a mentor than love interest. bummer

Unlike Rikiya’s story, the scores of the students don’t really matter after the camp. In that aspect, I’m okay with it. MC feels like she’s a better teacher afterwards, and there was a moment where she taught Shinichi something about teaching. It’s a little cliche, having the student be the teacher, but I feel like it’s executed well.

But the classic “Oh noes he’s sick and does something that shows his true feelings that he doesn’t remember” is never executed well. Never. Ever. Everrrrrrrrr. I feel like it’s such a cop-out. You get all excited and then the next morning it’s like nothing happened and we’re back at square one of the relationship. Stop doing that! It’s not just Voltage, it’s not just otome games. I see that all the time in dramas and manga too. hahaha If there was onnnnne thing I could just completely ban from romance stories….! Hahaha

The second half is pretty exciting due to a scandal that you’re at the heart of! Of the two endings, I preferred the romantic one. I also liked that you were more involved in the students’ lives and made more of an impact on them due to your teaching abilities.

This is an odd case where I like the character sprites more than the CGs. And well, personally, smoking is a huge turn-off. And he does it a lot throughout the story, and even in the CGs… and I can’t help it, that’s such a dealbreaker for me! And there wasn’t a blushing sprite! grr2 Noooo those are my favorite!

Overall, I feel like this is better done than Rikiya and it was a nice read if you like the sort of guy Shinichi is.  But I don’t think it’s good enough to win over those who don’t like the sort of guy Shinichi is. So, a solid three hearts.

holllywhatMy heart scale is defined as follows – 5 hearts = a story everyone will fall in love with, regardless of preferences; 4 hearts = a well-done story that people who love the concept will adore, and people who don’t may end up liking it; 3 hearts = if you like this type of story or this type of hero, then you will enjoy this, but those who do not like either of those things will probably not; 2 hearts = it had potential, it squandered it; 1 heart = just a waste of time from the get-go; 0 hearts = why was this made?

Favorite Moments

I didn’t screenshot much this go-around…

I loved loved loved loveeeeddd casual Shinichi and we didn’t get enough of it!

Second to the blushing sprites, that loving smile after all the stink-eyes, scowls, glares, ect ect ect is the best. It’s only possible in these types of routes because the impact is that much more.
